Why I never leave the house… January 12, 2012

- When’s nap-time, Damnit!
So as I haven’t left the house all week, I decided today was a nice sunny day to take the boys for a walk around Green Lake…
During their morning nap, I put out all their warm clothes, dragged the BOB stroller up the stairs outside and had my winter boots and coat ready to go near the front door.
After they wake up, I give them a good feed and change their cloth diapers to fresh paper ones for the walk.
Its precisely 1pm at this time and I think, good, we have a full hour and a half before their next nap.
So I start to get them dressed in their adorable matching sweaters, toques and mittens (from DebDeb) and their fleecy pants (from nana Shirl)… I take turns putting a sweater on one of them, and then a sweater on the other one, so that one isn’t overheating while I get the other one ready.
Then Ryan starts to squirm and bites off his mittens. I put them back on. Logan lets out a stinky fart. Ummm, okay, I check his diaper. Yep pooped in it.
I undress Ryan so he doesn’t overheat while I change Logan’s diaper. I undress Logan, change his diaper and then start all over re-dressing both of them.
By the time I have started to put on their puffy jackets (from uncle Chris and auntie Meghan), I look at the clock and see its exactly 1:58pm. It took me, ooh, about an hour to get them dressed. BUT, we are dressed and so head out the door into the BOB.
All is good as I start walking down the street, the sun shining, its a glorious day. We all are happy… for the moment.
But by the time I walk down the street, the boys are starting to fuss. Its past 2:30pm and its their nap time damnit. Yes, I am pretty sure that is exactly what they are thinking. I take my chances and continue to head towards Green Lake but by now they are in full pissed-off mode and won’t settle down in the BOB.
I turn around with a sigh, and start trudging straight up Alpine Way. By the time I get home, they are crying in rounds.
It took over an hour to prepare for the walk, and I got barely 20 minutes of enjoyment from it.
All in a day’s work, right?
Wrong! I’m not planning another walk until Spring.

Sara, one of the best things I ever got advise on when Oakley was a baby was to train him to sleep anywhere!! Did I say Anywhere? So while it took a while to get Oakley trained to sleep in the car seat, the stroller, the pulk ( ski sled), or backpack, and I did have to sometimes endure screaming that I thought would tear my heart out…..it paid off……Oakley then proceeded to have naps in the car seat, hiking backpack, stroller or Pulk for over 2 hours on a regular basis!! He then also did not mind sleeping in anyone else’s bed!! It was such a great payoff as it totally freed me from having to be home at naptime, instead the whole world opened up to me, as why be home for nap time, when I could go for a hike, or a cross country ski or visit a friend to have him nap on their bed… As kevin asked when we left the hospital with Oakley, “hey, you forgot to give me the manual for the baby!” I have discovered that it is us as parents who write the manual for our own kids as we live our lives…..XXX
Tell me more, tell me more! Thanks Trace for the advice, man do I need it…
The thing is that they used to sleep anywhere, especially during our walks when they were about 3 months old in the mild weather of October, but got all picky all of a sudden… they still are fantastic in the car seat for up to two hours, so we do go out driving, but I really need to get my walks/runs back in….
